You could look on your local council's website to see what local venues offer wedding packages.
If you negotiate hard you can get a bargain - but the cheapest way is to book rooms without letting them know it's for a wedding reception. (For some reason many places add a huge fee on top for weddings!)

Ask if there's any manager's discount available if you book now - that can sometimes be a good way of getting money off. Haggle!

Look at buffets rather than sit down meals and ask at your favourite local pubs. You might find a bargain available!

Makes notes on who you've spoken to and what prices things are. Ask if your prefered venue will price match.

Look at lots of venues in person - shortlist the ones you're interested in and then ask if you can have a look round - most will let you see the rooms.

Look at places that offer service and reception - does this work out cheaper than booking a separate place.

If they ask what your budget is, give them a figure lower than you'd actually want to spend.

Reception venues - Using a church hall or community centre might be a cheap venue. Ask how much the local pubs function room is. Some places might offer free room hire so it's well worth a little ringing round.

Food - Buffets are cheaper per head than a sit down meal. You could even do a buffet yourself - lots of sandwich shops will do platters of sandwiches and nibbles quite cheaply.
Ask family members if they'd consider doing the buffet as their wedding gift to you.
Would people object to going dutch? You could have a nice restaurant and get everyone to chip in! This might work if you're not asking for presents!

If you're really skint then consider a reception in your home following a marriage at the local register office.
